Family Friday: Kala

Hello.  My name is Kala.  I'm the oldest of the Furry Family; I'm 15-years-old... I think it's like a 105-years-old in a human.  I have to begin my story with a confession: my real mom is The Other One.  So, I'm going to call her Mommy, to differentiate her from Piru's Mom.

I have a big smile.
I came to live at grandma's house when I was a little puppy.  Grandma took me to be the outside dog (guard), but Mommy told her that I was too little to stay outside by myself; so, I ended up been an inside dog.  I was all black, except for a little white area at my chest.  But now I have my face almost entirely white, that's because of my age.

I'm an old dog with a young spirit.
I'm very loyal to my Mommy.  If she isn't home, I won't eat or go pee outside until she arrives; then, I'm myself again.

I love my mommy.
Oh, and here comes another confession: I used to hate cats.  Yep, that's right.  I used to bark at them so hard and run after them so fast that they lose one or two of their lives- JAJAJA... mmmm, sorry, I didn't mean to be disrespectful.  But, my point of view about cats changed when I was still living at my grandma's house and Michi came to live there, too.  I used to bark and run after Michi at the beginning, but, when Michi decided that she was going to live at the house anyway, so I learned to respect her and even play a little with her.

Hi, I'm Michi.
Then, Mommy moved out and, after a while I met Piru and his siblings.  Piru and I have a very special relationship: I pretend that I don't see him and he tries to be away from me.  I have barked at him a few times, but mostly because he gets near my dinner plate... and I can't accept that insolence.  Prince is a little afraid of me, too.  But I only want a little respect, I'm  the senior, after all.

Now, some other facts about me:

Oh, this is life.
I don't like toys, not even a ball.  What I love is to run, even at this old age.  When I was younger, Mommy used to call me "Quickie", because I loved to run very fast all the time and to everywhere.  I, also, love to roll around on the grass, even it it's a little wet. One of my favorite things to do is show my tummy and, if I receive a tummy scratch, is a lot better.

Would you like to scratch my tummy?
My biggest problem is that I'm very scared of thunderstorms and other strong sounds (like firearms shoots and fireworks).  Even when it's raining I begin to get nervous and, when the thunderstorms begin I hide, pant and shake like crazy.

***shake-shake-shake***

There are two things that I do that drives Mommy crazy.  The first one is when she takes me outside to pee and I take a loooooong time to choose the correct spot to do it.  Sometimes, after I have smell all the backyard, I don't want to do it there, so Mommy has to take me to the front yard.  She gets furious and ask me why do I have to be so choosy.  She gets mad specially when she's in a hurry.  The problem is that humans simply don't understand that you can't pee everywhere, it has to be the perfect spot.  The second thing is that, when she's preparing my meal, I'm there waiting and wagging my tail, but when she puts down my dinner plate, I smell it and go away.  I don't know why I do that, I simply go a few steps further and sit giving my back to her.

Why isn't a sirloin steak on my plate?

The problem is that, at that time, my sister Liah has ended her meal and wants to come to check out mine... and I don't like that a little bit.  So, I growl at her or bark.  To avoid that, Mommy takes away my plate for a while or puts me in a room with a baby gate on the door. I don't like it.

Mommy has tried to put some clothes on my, but I'm a natural girl.  I don't like to put on clothes, but I love my collar.  When Mommy puts it on after a bath I do some happy jumps.

I think I can't move.

Mommy, I'm not a cowgirl, get this thing away from me.
I've been a little sick lately.  I have a problem of incontinence since I was a puppy.  It was a problem easy to deal with, because it was just a few drops here or there.  But these last days I've been drinking water like crazy, and peeing like crazy, too.  Mommy says it's like a river.  She's been having a lot of work with my situation, because she has to mop 5 or 6 times daily and to clean me frequently because I get wet.  She gave me some antibiotics, but it didn't work.  So, finally, she took me to the vet again and he did a lot of tests and x-rays on me.  Everything was negative, I'm healthy... allegedly.  But, he doesn't understand the reason I drink so much water.  He'll be asking other vets for their opinion.  I hope he finds out what's wrong with me soon, I don't like to be isolated in a bedroom so I don't pee the entire house.

As you can see, I'm a good girl that loves her Mommy. Maybe, I have a few annoying habits, but then again, who doesn't?

I'm okey, the hurricane is gone

First of all, I want to thank all the anipals, my old friends and some new ones, that sent me a lot of purrrsss wishing me to be safe during the visit of hurricane Earl. And I want to say thank you, too, to Amy and the House of Cats for talking about me in her blog and asking her visitors to visit my blog, too.

Earl is the first hurricane that passes near Puerto Rico this year. It was a scary one because it was already a classified 4 hurricane before coming nearer. After Earl, there's another storm, Fiona, but it will not come so close- we hope.

What happened yesterday night and this morning? Well, a little while after I said goodbye on Twitter, we went out of electricity, water service went almost out, too. In the afternoon Mom allowed me to be in the garage, but at night she didn't let me out. I wanted to go to my funpark, but she said no, so I got grumpy. She wanted to sleep, but I was miaowing and acting all stressed out. So, she put a table at a side of a close window for Prince and me to see outside the house. I liked that and stayed calm the rest of the night. Prince liked it, too, and stayed there until the morning.

He even took a bath there.

But Mom was a little stressed worring about the roof of the garage that is made in aluminum; nothing happened to it.

During all night, the winds were making a lot of scary sounds and it rained a lot.

I got scared with the thunderstorms and hide under a chair. My sister Kala gets so nervous with that kind of noises that she starts to pant like crazy.

At home, we only got some fallen branches. Kala is inspecting the damages.

But around the island there were some floods, some people had to leave their homes and go to shelters and there were thousands of houses without electricity (http://www.elnuevodia.com/fotodetalle-puertoricobajoelazotedelhuracanearl-769539.htmll). The worst part was at Culebra and Vieques islands, two of PR's municipalities and the two most exposed to the winds of Earl.

At home, it was raining until early in the afternoon. Then, Mom and The Other One, went out to clean the backyard; they didn't had to go to work today, everyone was free. They cancel work and classes. Me? Well, I had to stay inside all day, sleeping, until Mom cleaned the funpark, that was full of leaves and small branches. The rain already stopped and the services are back (water and electricity). Everything is normal again. Thanks for worrying about us, I appreciate it.

Extended fun park and a little hanging out time

When The Other One saw the fun park (jail) Mom did for us, she said: "It's a miracle that Prince hasn't gone out of it!" It was because she saw a little hole and she knows that Prince is like a Houdini-cat. It seems like Prince heard her: that very night, Prince escaped and call Mom at 5:00 A.M. to enter the house. The Other One said that it can be easily fixed and she did. Mom had thought of making an extension of the place and told The Other One, so yesterday she decided that the "boys" needed more space and she worked all day and made a big extension of it. Mom was happy with the outcome.

Now, we can see to the front and to the backyard of the house.

And we have three separate spaces to go in and out. We can hide or see more of the premises.

Still, I don't know why I can't be free around the yard like Kala is.

But, this morning, our loud and sad meaws melted Mom's heart and let us roam free around the house for two hours. Prince ran to eat some grass and I began to search all around. Thanks Mom, we needed it. But now you know that I can be out without problem. With a little hanging out time daily we'll be more happy (for now). We still need our freedom - lets see if time keeps melting Mom's heart. What do you think?

Gradually, back to normal

Things are getting back to normal at home after Piccola's journey through the RB. Mom has been cleaning and re-arranging the office, it's where Piccola used to sleep; now, Kala sleeps alone there. We are moving this month back to Mom's house (now we are renting this house). So, working a lot is helping Mom with the sadness.
On a funny note:
Mom has been working and dealing with so many things these days that she's a little absentminded, I think. The other day, my human sisters where here and, when they and Mom get together they talk A LOT. So, they were talking and Mom wanted to drink from a bottle of water she had near. But, instead of taking the bottle of water, she took a bottle of rubbing alcohol that was besides the water. When she drank it, immediately spited it out and my sisters began to laugh and make jokes about Mom. Later, they continued with their conversation and Mom was going to give Liah her antibiotic pill. At that same moment, one of the girls told Mom to remember to take her pill. So, Mom, instantly put Liah's pill in her mouth. Thanks God, a second later she realized the error and spited the pill. Again, the girls began to make jokes and Mom was laughing, too. When they left told Mom to try not to make herself ill drinking or taking other's pills. Mom laughed.

Now, I'm watching Mom so she behaves properly.

Five Pets... A Thousand Names

Hi! I have a question for you: How many names do you have? Silly question? No, no; at least, not in my house. You see, we are five pets here, and each one has it's official name. But Mom loooooves to invent a lot of nicknames for each one of us. I don't care at all, she can call me "Tutti-fruitty" if she wants; if she has prawns in her hands, I'll come anyway.

Let start with the ladies:

This is Kala, AKA: Kalita, Kali, Kalinsky, Coqui and Quikie (because she loves to run everywhere).

This is Piccola, AKA: Picco, Piccolita, Piccolitis, Piccoletta, Piccoletera and Piscola.

This is Liah, AKA: Lulu, Luli, Susi, Misusi, Miñiñi, Moñoñi, Juanita and Dudi.

This is Prince, AKA: Barrigoncito, Pinchi, Pinchito, Pinchitito, Piriririnchi, The Romantic Cat and The Dripping Cat.

And, of course, me, Pirulo, AKA: Piru, Pirulito, Pirulitito, Piruriru, Pirulinsky, Gordo, Gordito, Ballenita and Belleza.

Now it's your turn. Which are your nicknames? It's fun!

Family hunting

Today, we went on a family hunting. We like things simple, that's why we don't need all those things humans need to go hunting, not even a big prey; a simple lizard will do just fine.

There was something between the bushes.

I tried to camuflage myself but my silly stepbro, Prince, found me.
He tried it too, but he's not as smart as me.

Even Kala and Liah participated.

But Piccola, as always, was lost and walking around.

At the end we found nothing. But, I don't care, at least it was good exercise. And, because we are "green" pets, we don't need to kill anything. Just scaring them to the bones is enough.

The Furry Family

Hello! Oh, I'm thrilled with my new blog! I told mom about it and she began to take photographs of all of us. She says that the first thing that I have to do is present my family. Well, I'm not sure about that. But I'm going to do it anyway, but very briefly. After all, the blog is about me, right?
So, I'm going to talk about my 7 stepbrothers and stepsisters. I live with 4 of them and the other 3 live with my grandpas.

This is me (of course, I have to be the first one). I'm Pirulo Furry, the most beautiful and intelligent pet in this house. I'm 7 years old. As you can see, I'm not fat, I'm husky with big bones and long hair. I have a deep look and my beautiful blue eyes are very expressive. Although I don't speak as humans do, mom always understands my meows and knows what I want. I have her well trained.

This is my stepbrother, Prince. He's 5 years old. He looks charming, but he has a different temperament than me. He hates to travel in the car and really- really hates the vet. Although, mom says he's a romantic because he likes to stop and smell the flowers. When he arrived to my home, I didn't want him, so mom had to maintain us separated for almost 3 months. I have to make a confession: because I didn't want him when he was little, I gave him some wrong instructions trying to make mom throw him away. That's why even today, when Prince goes to the litter box, he always dig first, but not after doing his business, so his stuff stays exposed. Oh, mom gets mad, but I'm glad. Ji, ji.

This one is one of my 4 doggy stepsis. This is Liah, the second youngest of all. She's a 3 years old shih-tzu. Mom says she's a pure breed because she has papers. To my knowledge, all dogs need papers, specially if it's raining and can't come out to do their business. Anyway, until Liah came to the house I always slept with mom in her bed, with my own pillow. But now, Liah sleeps there and don't leave me any space. I'm not mad at her for this, really, mostly because now I have my own space, my Fun Park. I'll talk about it another day.

This is Kala, a 13 years old mix. Oh, I'm afraid of her, she really has a temper. She's humble when mom scold her, but she's very territorial and doesn't want me anywhere near her area. Although she's aggressive with intruders, Kala almost dies with the sound of thunderstorms and explossions.

Piccola is the oldest pet in the house, she's an 18 years old chihuahua. She can't hear, see or smell well and sleeps most of the time. But, I don't know how she does it, she walks in the backyard almost half an hour twice a day, in the morning and after dinner. Because there are stairs in the house, mom has to be extra careful with her. I think Piccola doesn't know that I exist, but at least doesn't bother me, either.

The next three ones live with my grandpa and grandma in another city. I don't get to see them and don't know them well, but mom always tell me the news about them.

Dali is the son of Piccola and is a mix chihuahua. He's 11 years old and a patient of cancer. I was sorry he was very sick. But grandpa decided to give him a chance to live and pay a very expensive operation and treatment. He's almost ok now, but he's obese, so he can't run like when he was young. In spite of his health problems, Dali still likes to play with his squiky toys.

Michi is a beautiful calico cat whose favorite hobby is birdwatching. There's a spot, that grandma calls "the office", near the bird feeder where Michi spends most of the day. Grandma rescued Michi from a neighbor that didn't pay attention to her. She was very very skinny the first time she came near the house. Grandmas' dogs always barked at Michi, but because grandma began to put food for her, Michi decided that she was going to live there. With hisses and scratches, Michi gained the dogs respect and now she lives happy with them.

The last one is the youngest one. Uma is a mix doggy that has too much energy. She's only 10 months old and she was rescued, too, from mom's work. Her story is sad, but I'm not gonna tell it now. I'll only say that Uma was lucky mom decided to take her and her sister, who was later given to another family. Now she's the fun of the house and the guardian; oh, she barks really loud.

Well, that's the Furry Family. Now you know. Can we talk about me from now on?
