An update on Piccola...

Today is Piccola's last day. Mom isn't feeling well, but, she's trying to have all the strengh that she can and trying not to think too much about tomorrow, when Piccola will have her last trip, before her journey through the Rainbow Bridge. I tell Mom that she should cry all she wants because that'll make her feel better. But I look at her eyes and I know that she's trying to be strong and trying not to cry in front of others, specially in front of Piccola. I don't know if Piccola knows, but she's calm. Mom said she's going to give Piccola a bath today, then sit with her and have a talk. Sometimes, Mom used to sit with Piccola and have talks and Piccola looked at her like she understands everything (of course, we pets know a lot more than humand can ever imagine). Now, Mom doesn't do that anymore because Piccola can't hear and doesn't pay attention to Mom when she's talking. But Mom will try it anyway. Mom will explain to Piccola her decision and how hard it has been for her to make it. She'll explain Piccola the procedure and will tell her that there's nothing to be afraid of, and that she'll be free of all pains and will not suffer any more; she'll feel like when she's sleeping. I know Piccola will understand and accept it, she trusts Mom.

About Piccola

It's important to maintain a good mood when you have problems and sickness, specially between your family, including your pets. But it's soooooooooo hard!
It's been a bad month for Mom because some of us, her pets, have been sick. You already know about Liah. She's in a more intensive treatment of antibiotics and Mom is taking really good care of her. Prince had a rash and was scraching a lot, but Mom took him to the Vet, too, and with a shot and some drops he's feeling better already.
The saddest note is now. Do you remember my oldest sister, Piccola? She's a 19 years old chihuahua.
Yes, 19 years. She's been a healthy loving companion for a long, really loooooong time for Mom. For some time, Piccola have been suffering from some unusual behavior. She tends to walk to the left instead of straight forward. Mom thought that it was because Piccola can barely see. But, there have been a few times now that Piccola walks in circles: she walks and walks and walks until she drops exhausted and dizzy.
Mom consulted with a few Vets and everyone told her that it should be that she's having little brain hemorrhages and that soon she'll probably have a big one. Mom knows that Piccola is suffering. Sometimes she doesn't want to eat, sometimes she cries or is very nervous and can't sleep properly. The Vet told Mom that it's time for Piccola to cross the Rainbow Bridge.
I haven't write about it before because Mom didn't want me to. I think she was on denial. But now, she's facing the truth about Piccola's condition. This next week, Piccola will be crossing the RB, probably next Tuesday.
Here's a video of Piccola walking in circles.

Liah's third medical opinion

Today Mom took Liah to the 3rd Vet to have a new medical opinion. She was out all day, two hour drive to a city called Guaynabo and two hours back to where we live.

The new Vet used to see me, and my brothers. We used to live there, so he knows Liah and me. He ckecked Liah's medical history and spoke to Mom about what had happened. He agreed with Mom that Liah should not be operated again at this moment. He prescribed another antibiotics, along with the other one she's taking now. If she doesn't get well, they will perform a study that will let the Vet see where is the tissue damage (similar to a radiology). After that, he will operate if that's still needed.

Mom came tired but relief. Liah behaved like an angel, I heard Mom said. Well, usually she is very good, the only thing that she does that Mom don't like is when she sits repeatedly on Prince's head or body, but she does that to play.

I will keep you post on her health. Meanwhile thanks for your concern.

Below is a video of Mom giving Liah a head massage to ease today's stress. Liah loves it! She gets so relaxed that even takes her little tongue out.

Thanks to all my friends

Mom and I are very thankful to all our furry friends and human friends that are giving us their moral support, opinions and advice. Also to the ones that are including my sister Liah on their pawcircles.
Mom decided to follow the advice of most of you and take Liah to the third Vet. He's two hours away, but it's worth the effort.
Another good suggestion was to take her to the Vet School, but there's none in the island.
I'll give you follow ups on Liah's condition. Thanks again for all your words.

My stepsis is sick...

Remember, three month ago Liah was sick, she had a bump in her neck? They made an biopsy and she didn't had cancer. What a relief! The Vet recommended antibiotics and apparently she got well.

Well, guess what, she got a bacteria from where they had the biopsy taken. Mom took her to the same Vet and he prescribed again the same antibiotics. After a month or so Liah continued to be sick, so Mom took her to another Vet. This Vet said that the antibiotics the first Vet prescribed was not effective at all and the she got a bacteria from the procedure the first Vet used to do the biopsy. This new Vet operated on Liah's neck and prescribed a new antibiotics. This medicine didn't work either, so Mom took her again to the same Vet and he changed the antibiotics. After 10 days of taking two new antibiotics she continues to be sick. Today, Mom went again to the Vet and, guess what, he recommended another operation. Can you believe it? Mom said she doesn't think another operation will be good for Liah or for her pocket, if you understand. What Liah has is a very bad and stubburn bacteria, the skin is open and bleeding somewhat.

Mom is crush, she's been very worry and crying. I heard her say she is going to take Liah to another Vet, two hours away from where we live. I also heard that she was complaining about the fact that there are no laws regarding malpractice of medical issues relating pets. Also, that some vets get the money for the treatments even if they are useful or not. There are no consequences of their acts.

This is the second time Mom has this problem. Four years ago she lost her beloved lab called Sofia, now she thinks this could happen again. She's very frightened and worry sick. I heard her says: "if Liah dies I won't have another dog", and I think Mom is telling the truth. Every time one of us is sick she suffers too much. I have to talk her out of doing that. She cares so much about us that it will be a pity not to be a mother of all the potential pets that are around us.

What do you think Mom should do, take Liah to another Vet or give in and have Liah operated again? Tell me what I should do to convince Mom to keep on adopting us cats and dogs.

A New Friend

Here's a friend called Whiska Pusskat. He has a beautiful blog but apparently he doesn't get many visitors. He's sick with Feline Leukemia and FIV, but he's on a treatment and doing a little better. Please, visit him and leave messages so he and his humans knows he has good friends in our online community.
I knew about Whiska through another new friend, Huffle Mawson, Explorer Cat. Huffle's from Australia. Beautiful country.
